Yes, in the most simple sense I take photos of the scenes but there’s a bit more to it. I thought I’ll take a moment to explain what process I go through.
Before I start a production, I talk to the director, producer and/or PR about how the film will be position. I like to get an idea of how the images will be utilized so I know what I should keep an eye out for.
Going through the script, I’ll make note of key scenes and confer with the director or producer to touch base. What is an important scene to the film. What needs to be highlighted ?
On set besides doing production stills, I also look for behind the scene shots that’ll help with the marketing – usually this involves images of the director with the actors, director with the producer, director with the writer, and so forth. These images are useful for press kit photos.
Other things I do is to photograph locations and sets without the actors along with detail shots as they can be useful for poster art.
For example, for the Queens of the Stone Age “3’s & 7’s” poster, Interscope looked through all the images I shot, selected specific images and put it together for the poster. Here’s the final.

And here’s three of the four images used.

Sometimes special photographers are hired for the gallery shots – usually on the higher budget productions. For myself, I tend to travel with my own lighting kit so I can set up shots and when the actors have a free moment, I’ll do some quick shots. Example : On a film I was working on last year, I found an unused wall of the set, put my own lights up and did some of these gallery shots of the main characters.

On this other production, I took the gals aside and posed them against the desert background.
